Digital Book Nook Magazine recently had the pleasure of talking with Jessica McAnelly, author of “Birdie’s Cooking Class: A Tasty Take on Healthy Eating.” In this exclusive Q&A, Jessica shares the inspiration behind her story and her writing journey. We are excited to share this insightful interview with our readers today.
When did you first discover that you enjoy writing and wanted to become a published author?
I’ve always loved storytelling, but I truly felt called to publish when I realized I could blend my nutrition and food safety background with children’s books. I had a milestone birthday coming up, and I had made a special list of 50 things to do before turning 50, and writing a children’s book was one of the most important items to checkoff. I did research about what was out there in terms of food safety for young children, and could not find one book, so that is where Birdie started.
What is your favorite and the most challenging aspect of writing?
My favorite part is making learning feel fun. The challenge is simplifying important concepts while keeping the story playful and engaging. Making it make a lasting impact for children to want to read again and again.

Tell us about your latest release.
My latest book continues Birdie’s adventures, focusing on healthy habits and wellbeing through joyful, relatable storytelling. I am working on book three now and am excited to release it in late March or early April, fingers crossed. Teaming up with the real-life “Birdie,” my daughter, to help in the process of book three.
How did you come up with the title of your book?
The title grows from Birdie’s experience in the story. I aim for something playful, inviting, and meaningful. I love playful and engaging titles for children’s books, something that can roll easily off their tongues.
What do you hope readers can get from reading your story?
I hope children feel inspired, confident, and curious, and that parents see the books as tools for positive conversations. I love it when I hear from children and families that they planned a family picnic together. If I can bring families together, talking about this serious topic, then I feel like the book has been a success.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
I’ve always loved To Kill a Mockingbird and The Help. My favorite children’s author is Tommy DePaola. My grandmother introduced me to his books, and I still treasure a signed copy she gave me when I was young.
Do you have any advice for writers looking to get published?
Keep writing, keep learning, and don’t wait for perfection. Publishing is as much about persistence and courage as it is about talent. I also preach that you are never too old to make a dream become a reality. Don’t let fear stand in the way of getting your book published.
