Digital Book Nook recently caught up with Sonali Deuskar Gurpur, Author of “A Box of Chocolates.” We are excited to share this insightful interview with our readers today.
When did you first discover that you enjoy writing and wanted to become a published author?
I first discovered that I enjoyed writing when I was nine. I hoped I would be published in The Reader’s Digest.
What is your favorite and the most challenging aspect of writing?
My most favorite part of writing is when the narrative comes together in a metaphor or image that I can begin to describe.
The most challenging aspect of writing for me is to override my Hinglish-style sentence construction. I grew up speaking Hindi as my first language, and that greatly influences my writing. That can cause some hilarious mixups sometimes.
Tell us about your latest release.

My ebook A BOX OF CHOCOLATES, a book of poems is on Amazon KDP. I am working on my collection of anecdotes, and hope to publish soon.
How did you come up with the title of your book?
My collection spans a really wide range of topics. Moodwise, they run from very sad to very happy. The closest anything comes to a collection like that is a box of chocolates, like the one Forrest Gump says his mama used to talk about. My collection of anecdotes is mostly about women, ages five to fifty, and roses seemed like a nice symbol of femininity. Besides, together the two books make a gag gift for perhaps Valentine’s Day, or a birthday.
What do you hope readers are able to get from reading your story?
I hope my readers are reminded of their childhood and youth, and their own archetypal journey through parenthood and beyond, bringing back memories of pivotal moments in their lives, and also the mundane moments that have a curious habit of becoming precious over the years. So many people leave an indelible mark on our lives, good and bad, and neutral. It all makes a fine story. Every human life is a beautiful documentary-in-waiting. Yes, I encourage journaling.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Enid Blyton, Haruki Murakami, Mary Oliver, and the classics, T.S. Eliot, James Joyce, William Blake, Keats, Rumi, Harivanshrai Bachchan
