Interview with Alex Mac, Author of Mulch

Digital Book Nook recently caught up with Alex Mac, author of “Mulch.” We are excited to share this insightful interview with our readers today.

When did you first discover that you enjoy writing and wanted to become a published author?

I developed a love for writing very earlier on when I was still a kid. However, only now have I been motivated to and have the fortitude to release it to the world.

What is your favorite and the most challenging aspect of writing?

The favorite part I’ve found about writing is developing characters and finding out that characters quirks and strong points as I’m writing them.

The most challenging thing is just being consistent and staying on a strict schedule.

Tell us about your latest release.

Mulch is a horror story centered around a black farmer and his family on a rural Southern Maryland farm. One night a terrifying event rocks them out of their sleep and begins a series of horrifying events that leads them to a conflict with a creature that may not be from Earth.

How did you come up with the title of your book?

Not sure. I actually first came up with this story when I was a kid and the title came from that. I couldn’t think of a better one or one that was as unique as Mulch so I just decided to go with it. I’m pretty happy with the title since it is very unique.

What do you hope readers are able to get from reading your story?

I hope to provide a decent read for black readers who are horror fans. I want to provide a book in all of my favorite genres (Horror, Sci-Fi, Fantasy) that have characters that are very relatable to us and in our narrative voices that you typically don’t find in bookstores or online.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

My fav authors at the moment are: Victor Lavelle, N.K. Jemesin, Octavia Butler, Stephen King, Philip K. Dick, Joseph Delaney, Edgar Allen Poe, & William Gibson.

Do you have any advice for writers looking to get published?

The best advice I can give now is to find a good editor that you can work with and one that understands the vision for your book. That was the first major challenge I ran into starting this journey as there are many people looking to take advantage of you and not help you.
